Let's talk about something crucial but often overlooked – invoicing

While the basic act of invoicing is well-understood, crafting a winning invoicing strategy is an art that goes beyond the conventional norms.. It's an opportunity to establish a rhythm that not only ensures prompt payments but also enhances the overall financial health of your creative business.

Last year we were sending out the invoices depending on the project starting dates we had with clients, until it turned into a chaos. Different payment dates, meant a constant stream of income which can be good, but also very confusing when you try to have a clean overview of your monthly income.

At the beginning of the year we chose the 15th, 28th, and the 1st as an optional invoicing date. Now... What if you choose the 15th? Mid-month invoicing?

Sending out invoices around the middle of the month, say on the 15th, can be a strategic move for several reasons:

Fresh Budgets: Clients often receive budgets at the start of the month. By the 15th, they have a clearer picture of their financial standing and are more likely to have funds available for settling invoices.

Avoiding Month-End Rush: By steering clear of the common end-of-month invoicing rush, your invoice is less likely to get lost in the sea of financial transactions. This can lead to faster processing and payment.

What if you prefer the last day of the month?

To start the next month with your clients invoices paid?

Monthly Financial Cycles: Many businesses operate on a monthly financial cycle. Invoicing at month-end aligns seamlessly with their accounting practices, making it convenient for clients to process payments.

Bookkeeping Simplicity: Clients often reconcile their accounts and close their financial books at the end of the month. Your invoice fits neatly into their financial workflow, reducing potential delays.

My advice for you as someone who can feel organized in chaos, try experimenting with different dates, gathering feedback from clients, and evolving your approach over time.

The true art of crafting a winning invoicing strategy lies in tailoring your approach to the unique tempo of each client AND your business; Ask them what dates they would prefer if your invoicing dates don't suit them, but avoid doing the same mistake I did and sending invoices out daily...

WAIT, before you leave..

If you feel that everything related to finances is consuming you and makes you feel anxious, please look into outsourcing those tasks to a VA and/or Accountant.

It may be an investment but nothing will EVER be 'too expensive' when it comes to your wellbeing and mental health. (or the feeling of a free and serene mind).
